“Tribute to a Potato Eater” is a contemporary appropriation of Vincent van Gogh’s The Potato Eaters (1885). Hidden in the simple decor are references to two of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, The Starry Night (1889) and Sunflowers (1888). I juxtaposed the Van Gogh compositions against modern consumerism by replacing his meal of potatoes with a serving of McDonald’s french fries. To take his idea further, Bryan’s “potato eater” dons a large Pepsi logo on her white shirt, a heavily recognized symbol of the fast food culture.
