“April 3, 1968” is a salute to the speech Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered on April 3, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. In the background is a distant mountain top referring to the popularly known excerpt “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.” The work is one artistic interpretation of a heavenly setting where Dr. King lives because of the content of his character, though his life lacked longevity.
With the celestial mountain referenced in his speech looming in the background, King sits proudly amongst a group of young angels, a scene reminiscent of a respected elder surrounded by loving admirers.
Fun Fact: The angels were modeled after Bryan’s daughters and their friends. It took many hours to capture the exact poses Bryan envisioned for the painting.
